Nobody really knows where the Australian Outback begins or ends. It is a state of mind, a mystic land of miners and cowboys (known as “ringers”) and wandering aborigines and tellers of tall stories.

A journey through the Outback quickly reveals why most Australians rarely venture far from the creature comforts of the coast.

The great southern land has its share of physical beauty, including lush tropical rainforest, alpine snowfields, neat pastures, coral atolls, endless sandy beaches, and rolling plains.

But all that is relatively close to civilisation. Beyond broods a primeval, eroded landscape of ochre plains and searing desert, broken here and there by gaunt ribs of granite, basalt and ironstone. Throwing it all into stark relief is the brilliant light, pitiless in its intensity.

Much of Australia’s 7.6 million square kilometres are empty of humans, one-third is desert. Hindered by the harshness of climate and terrain, man has nibbled at the edges where there is dependable rainfall and intermittent fertility.

A year in Mount Isa, a raw copper-mining town in the red rock desert of northwest Queensland, gave me an insight into some of the hardships faced by Outback dwellers.

Day-time temperatures often hovered around 45 degrees C and fine red dust permeated houses, eyes and food. One night at the open-air cinema the performance was abandoned when a dust-storm blotted out the screen.

However, anybody with a taste for adventure will find the Outback fascinating. Just load up your camper-van and take off. These days many of the inland highways are even paved.

The interior, with its suggestions of rugged individualism, courage against all odds, pioneer struggles, plays an important part in the Australian consciousness.

Dorothea Mackellar reflected that in her poem My Country: “I love her far horizons, I love her jewel sea, Her beauty and her terror, The wide brown land for me.”

If you are tired of crowds and cities and really want to “get away from it all”, this is the place. Maps may suggest that the interior is dotted with settlements. But those exotic place-names, Mooloogool or Christmas Creek, often indicate no more than a cattle station (as Australians call ranches) or a tin-roofed pub.

Bumping along dusty Outback roads, you can travel for a day without meeting another vehicle. On one trip, floodwater forced me to make a detour of 1,300 kilometres, all over dirt tracks.

No traffic jams here, just a wilderness of spikey scrub, eucalyptus trees and dry creek-beds, brolgas (ostrich-like birds) ambling into the heat-haze, galahs (parrots) flying up in bursts of grey and pink, a kangaroo lolloping across the track.

So vast are some of the Outback cattle stations that ringers working the boundary zones may never see the homestead. Until it was split up, Victoria River Downs in the Northern Territory spread over 31,000 square kilometres, the size of Belgium.

These days visitors fly in just to see the sun set over the big sight of the Outback, Ayers Rock, a 348-metre-high monolith jutting from the surrounding desert. You can drive there too – it’s a mere 450 kilometres away from the nearest town, Alice Springs.

As an Aussie friend never tired of telling me: “She’s a big country, sport.”

Long before the first Europeans laid eyes on the snow covered peak of Kilimanjaro the Chagga people had lived, worked and worshiped on its slopes. It seems unlikely that the Chagga climbed to the summit before Hans Meyer made his successful summit attempt in 1889. The Chagga people have lived on the slopes of Kilimanjaro for around 400 years and their lives and culture are intertwined with the mountain on many different levels.

Most of the Chagga traditions have now been lost and replaced by western cultures and religions but the writings of some of the early African explorers still give an insight into the Chagga way of life before western culture took hold. ‘Kilimanjaro & It’s People’, written by Charles Dundas, published in 1924 gives the most recent historical account of the Chagga people. Hans Meyer also visited the region in 1889 and he describes Machame as the biggest Chagga settlement with around 8000 inhabitants; Moshi had around 3000 inhabitants as did Marangu.

The Chagga people have been just as fascinated with Kilimanjaro as westerners are today. According to Dundas the Chagga people viewed the summit of Kilimanjaro as something beautiful, strengthening and eternal, its snows providing streams that support life while the rain clouds that gather on its slopes providing precious rainfall.

The question that many people ask is, ‘Did the Chagga climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro before Meyer summited in 1889?’ Johannes Rebmann was probably the first European to lay eyes on Kilimanjaro in 1848. He believed that they had reached the snowline as they understood that Kilimanjaro was covered in what they described as magic silver which melted its way down the mountain. Rebmann also heard a second hand account relating to a group of Chagga that were sent to investigate the ice above Machame. Only one member of the group returned and his hands and feet were so frost bitten that no further attempts were made on the mountain. Rebmann describes how his Chagga guides referred to the snow on Kilimanjaro as coldness and the Chagga word for snow is Kibo.

In Hans Meyer’s book, ‘Across East African Glaciers’ he describes how he found the remains of a hunting camp on saddle between Mwenzi and Kibo. This is the highest historical account of human life on Kilimanjaro before Meyer summited. The saddle sits above 4000 metres so we can definitely assume that the Chagga made it this high. No evidence exists that they made it any higher and the evidence points more to the Chagga not venturing to the summit until after the mountain was climbed by Hans Meyer.

Whether or not the Chagga summited before Hans Meyer is only important in history. Today the Chagga people are among the most experienced mountain guides on the African continent. The Chagga understand the history of Kilimanjaro, they live on and around the mountain in its present state and they wonder what the future holds for themselves and Kilimanjaro.

Yes, yes, but don’t be afraid, shall we go?

I had read the words ‘rhino encounter’ with a slight twinge of trepidation that morning. Alright, make that a veritable shudder. I was on an African safari in the quiet undulating game reserves of in Kwa Zulu Natal, a hidden gem in South Africa’s little explored eastern side. I’d already enjoyed game drives through the rolling expanse of Hluhluwe National Park and I’d been to Kruger many years before. But suddenly faced with a real life encounter – on foot! – I was terrified.

I knew I shouldn’t be. Walking safaris are permitted in few places across Africa, so I knew this mini walking holiday was actually a real treat. Even if the butterflies in my stomach didn’t seem to think so.

But before I could change my mind we set out from our trusty, sturdy vehicle and walked slowly, steadily in single file across the bush. All of sudden my fears lifted and I began to trust my guide and my footsteps as he talked about the reserve, the rubbery plants and the sparse light trees and the tracks.

Here, come and look at this, he said pointing to slight marks in the soil. Mongoose, he said. See the droppings here too. It was at this moment with this kind of knowledge, an almost universal appreciation and understanding of the habitat that made me trust and admire my guide.

I was given reason to trust him even more, when we heard a rustle and a snort behind the trees.

No we do not want to disturb him. He sounds like he’s having fun. Let’s continue.

And on we went, until high in the hillside, out of sight of my poor eyes, a light camouflaged figure was spotted. We had found the white rhino. I found I actually felt quite excited at this moment and agreed, as our guide suggested we track the rhino, walking into the wind so our scent wouldn’t carry. Until finally we were there…
